Tetrathemis platyptera Selys, 1878

This picture shows a male Tetrathemis platyptera holding territory on a selected twig about 18" above a stream's water surface.
Careful examination of the twig reveals lots of eggs. Earlier I had watched the female attach these eggs to the tip of the stick with the male hovering in close attendance. This is quite an unusual egg laying procedure for libellulid dragonflies which normally drop their eggs freely on to the water's surface.
