Male Gynacantha dohrni’s anal appendage is pale color, narrow triangular and is less than one third the length of the dark superior appendage. The pair of superior appendages is long, thin and slightly distally expanded with a sharp point at the tip. (G. basiguttata is rounded tip)
Like many other species, G. dohrni’s anal appendage has a pair of sharp hooks at the end.

Gynacantha dohrni can be easily confused with Gynacantha basiguttata. The easy visual way to separate these 2 species is the base of the abdomen of G. dohrni is more colorful with bright blue auricles while G. basiguttata’s abdomen base is somberly colored with green auricles.

Gynacantha dohrni is a common species. Gynacantha species are easily recognized by the swollen spherical base to the abdomen with large rounded ear-like auricles on segment 2 followed by an extremely constricted segment 3.
