A female Neurothemis terminata terminata (Ris, 1911)

Female’s brownish green color is completely different from the dark red color of male. But body pattern and markings same as male. I would not be able to tell it is a Neurothemis terminate if I did not see the pair joining together several seconds ago. This photo was taken when this female took a few seconds rest before going ahead to laying eggs. The ovipositing took less than a minute after which she flew away leaving the male continue guarding his territory.

A dark wing female Neurothemis terminate. Rear to see a female with dark wing.

Body pattern and markings same as a clear-wing female.

Most N. terminate female I saw are clear-wings. The chances to see a dark wing female is 20 to 1 (i.e. seeing 21 females only one is a dark wing).

Neurothemis terminata is one of the 4 confusing Neurothemis species that easily mixed up by their similar red color and pattern.

But the Neurothemis terminate is easier to separate from others by their wing tip pattern. Neurothemis terminate hind wing red area margin is straight and perpendicular to the wing margin.

A dark wing female Neurothemis terminata. Fully matured with eggs inside abdomen ready to be fertilized before laying into water.
